Who is the module for?

Final year students on the BA Business Studies

Module aims:

1. To provide you with intermediate and advanced conceptual and practical learning in entrepreneurship

and innovation in different specialist sectors.

2. To develop an independent research and online collaborative skills necessary to engage in enterprise

and innovation practices in new and existing organisations through a mix of study activities and self

selected experiential projects participants will

Brief module description/summary:

This module provides an introduction to the core concepts, policy challenges and ethical issues in

Sustainable Development. It is aimed at a wide range of learners and provides a grounding in

sustainability ideas and issues that is self-contained but also prepares students for getting the best from

the complementary strategies of making organisations sustainable

Module learning outcomes:

1. Develop a critical understanding on the definitions of sustainability and its impact on creating

long term competitive advantages for organisations

2. Critically evaluate roles and responsibilities of sustainable strategic managers and how to

apply tools of strategic business management to problems of sustainability.

3.Negotiate, influence, and agree roles and rewards within founder teams in entrepreneurial and

business settings, doing so in a legitimate ethical manner.

4.Develop attributes and capabilities for business success in a complex and changing

environment

A variety of teaching approaches is used, including lectures, seminars, case analysis, teamwork and

extensive use of electronic resources for guided research.

The module is assessed via a business report and a case study to allow students to demonstrate the

understanding on the relevant models of sustainability and the analysis of the key factors impact on the

development of sustainable organizations.

In this assignment, you will investigate the relationship between sustainability and strategic

business management, with a particular focus on how sustainability initiatives contribute to an

organisation's competitive advantage. You will also explore the dynamics of founder teams

within entrepreneurial and business environments, examining their roles, responsibilities, and

ethical considerations.

Drawing from relevant theories, frameworks, and case studies, critically analyse how

organisations can develop and execute sustainability strategies that foster long-term

competitive advantages. Use real-world examples to illustrate how firms have successfully

utilised sustainability initiatives to gain a competitive edge.

Examine the role of strategic managers focused on sustainability within organisations. How do

these roles differ from traditional strategic management roles in terms of responsibilities and

objectives?

Investigate the dynamics of founder teams in entrepreneurial ventures. What are the key roles

within these teams, and how do team members negotiate their responsibilities and rewards?

Consider the influence and power dynamics in these discussions, particularly in the context of

ethical decision-making.

This assignment assesses your ability to strategize, resolve issues, and use persuasive

communication skills effectively. It evaluates your proficiency in applying concepts of

strategy, entrepreneurship, innovation, problem-solving, and persuasive communication within

a dynamic commercial environment. Please follow the submission guidelines carefully and

ensure your work demonstrates academic rigour and comprehensive research.

You are tasked with analysing the following case study and completing the exercises below:

INNOVATIVE SUSTAINABILITY: BETTING ON GREEN STEEL

Exercise 1

Using relevant entrepreneurship and innovation literature, such as Sarasvathy's work on

causation and effectuation (2008), analyse the case study and identify specific entrepreneurial

and innovation-related challenges or barriers faced by the venture. Consider the critical choices

regarding the operation base (India or Oman), the method of green steel production (carbon

capture and storage or green hydrogen), the target market (automotive sector or wind turbine

manufacturing industry), and the business model (green premium pricing or carbon credits).
