Write a report where you critically evaluate the HR practices of John Lewis and make recommendations for how they can improve.
You can choose to discuss topics in any of the following areas:
- Training, Learning & Development
- Performance Appraisals/Management
- Reward Strategy
- Employee Relations
Pick at least one of these. You may try to include more or all of them if you want to do so but consider what will allow you to perform well within 3,300 words (3,000 words + 10%). Do not exceed 3,300 words, as this is the maximum limit.
You may also consider how John Lewis’ business environment shapes how these practices are done, and what their competitors and industry do as examples of practices.
Don’t forget to carefully look at their available online information, or other data reports/news articles which could present a more in-depth perspective. John Lewis is an organisation that has had both good and bad publicity for their HRM.
GUIDANCE FOR HOW TO COMPLETE THE TASK
- This is a very large organisation, so don’t try to solve everything! Pick a few areas or examples and focus on the quality of your recommendations rather than the quantity. Perhaps you may consider what has been discussed in the news.
- As you know, individual HR practices (training, learning and development, reward, or employee relations) do not exist in isolation. Please think about what the overall purpose of HR is and its context.
- Please give the reasons for the recommendations you make and consider their potential limitations.
- Perhaps there are other organisations you can mention as examples of certain practices, but please focus on how they apply to the organisation in your report.
- Make sure you support your statements and ideas with evidence (i.e. academic journal articles, books, statistics, research, and what other organisations do). Please use the Harvard Referencing system so that I can look up any references that you use.
- The quality of your recommendations and arguments are more important than the quantity that you make.
- The aim of this report is to see where you are in terms of your understanding and knowledge of HR theories and practices and to see if you can apply these to a business. Don’t forget the application.
- Please make sure that it is presented as a professional business report, and not just as an essay. Write formally, and in third person (not in first-person).
BMA5102-20 ASSESSMENT TWO
(70% of total mark for the module; Assessment One was the other 30%)
This assessment will be a case study. A fictional employee from an organisation (one which exists in real life) will ask for your recommendations about a certain set of HR practices which we have already looked at in the module. You will need to write these in the format of a report, and we will have the opportunity to cover report-writing strategies during at least one seminar.
You have been given this time frame so that you have the opportunity to use concepts which have been taught in the lectures and seminars before then. You may also choose to write about topics discussed after the Winter Vacation for this assessment.
The assessment criteria for Assessment One and Assessment Two are the same. It is intended that this will allow you to use your experience and feedback from Assessment One to develop your writing for Assessment Two.

Word length
3,000 Words
Word limit
10% above 3,000 words (so 3,300 words). It is the policy of the department to not mark any work over the +10% limit. You must indicate your word count in your work, preferably on a title page.
What’s included in the word count.
The word count includes all work from Introduction to Recommendations/Conclusion. Tables written by you in the body of the report are also included in the word count. The reference list at the end of your report is NOT included in the word count.
Submission method
You will submit your assignments electronically through Turnitin. These submission links will appear in the folder ‘Assessment’ (+ name of your campus) in VLE.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
There are six assessment criteria which these (written) assignments will be marked to. They are:
KNOWLEDGE – Demonstrates academic knowledge of relevant HRM topic areas covered on module and applies this to the case study.
BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT AWARENESS – Is aware of the current business environment and how this affects the issues in the case study.
ANALYSIS – Analyses, thinks critically, evaluates, and makes judgements.
READING – Uses a variety of appropriate sources including those from set seminar reading articles. Appropriate sources at Level 5 are not Wikipedia, GCSE Bitesize, Mindtools or Business Balls.
REFERENCING – Uses the Harvard referencing system throughout the report. This means an accurate referencing list at the end of the report and also accurate in-text referencing in the report. Cite Them Right Online has information on how to do this for each type of information source and referencing style (use Harvard).
PRESENTATION – Communicates clearly in writing – produces a readable and professional business report.

KNOWLEDGE

For a Fail (0-39%)
Little or no evidence of academic understanding and application of the theoretical concepts covered. Or insufficient explanations in your own words to judge your level of understanding.
For a Pass (40-49%)
Covers the topic areas adequately and makes attempts to apply these to the case study. But the needs of the organisation may not be demonstrated, or there are gaps in knowledge, too many quotes or explanations could be clearer.
For Sound Quality (50-59%)
A good grasp of the topic areas and these are adequately applied to the case study. You explain concepts clearly, using your own words with appropriate quotations and examples.
For Good Quality (60-69%)
A greater depth of knowledge and application to the most relevant theoretical concepts.
For Excellent Quality (70-84%)
You show an authoritative grasp of the topic areas with confident application to the case study but there may be a few errors.
For Outstanding Quality (85-100%)
An Excellent Quality assignment, but with no errors or areas of criticism.
BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT AWARENESS
“Is aware of the current business environment and how this affects the issues in the case study.”
For a Fail (0-39%)
The wider business environment is either not mentioned or only in a superficial and unsubstantiated way (e.g. “there is a tight labour market in the UK”; “Brexit’s going to be important too”).
For a Pass (40-49%)
Attempts to show awareness of business environment – e.g. gives some examples of real organisations to illustrate points, some statistics are quoted.
For Sound Quality (50-59%)
You show an awareness of the current UK business environment and how it affects some issues in the case study. Demonstrated by use of statistics or appropriate examples of other organisations to back up your statements.
For Good Quality (60-69%)
As with a Sound Quality assignment, but with greater depth of knowledge, more care given to selection of relevant organisations. Statistics are up to date and relevant.
For Excellent Quality (70-84%)
You confidently set the whole report within the context of the current UK business environment. You show critical thinking in your choice of interesting statistics and examples of HR practices from other organisations.
For Outstanding Quality (85-100%)
An Excellent Quality assignment, but with no errors or areas of criticism.
ANALYSIS
“Analyses, thinks critically, evaluates and makes judgements.”
For a Fail (0-39%)
Little or no evidence of critical thinking. Personal opinions are given, with little or no evidence given. Recommendations are either not given, or inappropriate and not justified.
For a Pass (40-49%)
Attempts to analyse the case study and think critically, but personal opinions are given with insufficient evidence. Recommendations are given but their justification could be clearer.
For Sound Quality (50-59%)
The key issues within the case study are identified. Comparisons between authors are attempted. Arguments and statements are adequately backed up with evidence. Recommendations are given and you have adequately justified your choices.
For Good Quality (60-69%)
Clear evidence of critical thinking. You back up arguments with effective evidence. Comparisons between authors are made. Recommendations are clear, appropriate to the case study organisation and justified.
For Excellent Quality (70-84%)
As with a Good Quality assignment and has also begun to challenge other people’s ideas and HRM practices. Your recommendations demonstrate a deep understanding of the possible implications for the case study organisation.
For Outstanding Quality (85-100%)
An Excellent Quality assignment, but with no areas of criticism.
READING
