Before you start writing your report, you should plan what you are trying to achieve. Try to think about:
- Purpose • Audience • Context
A common practice when planning a piece of written work is to brainstorm all of the aspects of the topic that come into mind when thinking about the assignment. There are many free, super helpful, and easy mind-mapping tools online.
You produce a first draft and then go back and think about how it best fits the purpose, audience, and context. This is where the step of ‘review and rewrite’ comes in, and you should go back over your work and produce further drafts until you are happy with the assignment. This report must be a professional document detailing your work in precise, analytical detail with an emphasis on self-reflective practice.
- You will be expected to pay close attention to your spelling and grammar throughout your assessment.
- If you are dyslexic, please ensure you attach your yellow stickers to each copy of your assessment that you hand in.

It is not always necessary to use third-person narrative when writing. The report is designed to allow you to express your opinion, self-reflect, and give critical analysis. Therefore, it is acceptable to use expressions such as:
- I did… • I thought… • I understood…
This is particularly appropriate when discussing your own personal development. At times, when you are discussing the work completed, the third-person narrative may be more appropriate.
Your report must include the following details:
Cover Page:
- Document Title
- Module Code, Module Name, Semester (Autumn).
- Student Name & Surname
- Student ID
Table of Content (ToC):
- Headings must be presented together in a table of contents after the cover page.
- Please update your table (right-click on ToC and click update) once the document is ready for submission to ensure page numbers reflect the correct content.
Section Headings:
- The report must be sectioned; each section must use headings and a numbering
system.
- It is usual to indent the section headings and then to double indent the individual parts within the section, like this:

The following structure and headings are suggested for your report. Depending on your learning activity, you are allowed to make small changes to the format below as long as it remains well- formatted and documents your learning experience in clear detail.
You may also wish to include screenshots, diagrams, and additional information you’d like to share with your supervisor in Appendix C, which is optional.
Introduction:
This section could include:
- Introduction to your chosen career development activity.
- Background overview.
- Information on the structure and role of the learning activity provider. Depending on your chosen activity, the provider can be the employer, a company, a charity, an internal department with London Met, or the certifying authority of your chosen certification program, the website used to gain your accreditation, and so on. Note that this section should not serve as a report on the company and should be limited to no more than two small-medium paragraphs.
- Details of the specific department you worked in or the specific certification program or course you’ve chosen.
Review of Learning Activities
- This section summarises the tasks, work and activities carried out as part of your chosen activity; reference these to the agreed learning outcomes in the LA form. You will have previously discussed and listed your learning outcomes (LOs) in your learning agreement.
Summarise & Evaluate
Academic Context
The section should discuss how your career development learning activity relates to your course and vice versa. You should reflect on how your studies prepared you for CDL undertaking and how your learning activity has affected your future plans. You will need to comment on which elements of your academic theory you have seen being applied in the workplace.

Abilities Evaluation
In this section, you should summarise and evaluate your ability and skills development, including a reflection on the learning outcomes you’d set at the start of your CDL activity.
- Be reflective! Draw from the knowledge gained throughout your learning journey.
- Be analytical! Avoid simply regurgitating technical jargon related to capabilities.
- This section is also an important part of your report.
Challenges
You should comment on any challenges or issues you encountered during your learning experience and how you dealt with them.
- Challenges are not weaknesses!
- Identify the relevant challenges.
- Describe each challenge.
- Analyse impact. Discuss the consequences of each challenge on your overall learning experience. For example, how did these challenges affect your progress, performance, and mindset?
- Ensure that you've clearly articulated how you addressed the challenges.
- Ensure you effectively convey the valuable lessons and insights gained from overcoming these challenges.
Conclusion
This section should be placed on a new page, such as it is here. Remember that the conclusion is not a reflective summary but serves as a succinct closing statement. It should draw together and close your report and need not exceed three concise paragraphs.

Reflective Summary
This section is a crucial part of your report, and your supervisor will thoroughly examine it to analyse how your learning experience has shaped your development.
Use the 5R Framework for reflection as a guiding tool when writing your reflective summary.
- Report • Respond • Relate • Reason • Reconstruct
- Synthesise and connect your learning experience with the objectives you set at the beginning of your CDL activity. Analyse how confronting challenges aligned with or deviated from your initial goals.
- Share insights into what you learned during the experience. Consider both the practical
knowledge and the personal growth. Reflect on how this learning experience aligns with your academic goals and career aspirations.
End on a positive note and state key, positive takeaways from your learning experience. Do you have any future plans to carry on with or take your current learning experience or
placement even further?
REMEMBER – This section is a stand-alone piece of work worth 20% of the total mark, which must be included in your report according to this suggested format. DO NOT rush this section.

Appendix A – Further Work, Documentation, Notes
You can include additional information here. For example:
- Additional information on artefacts created as part of your learning experience

- Meetings notes, team notes
- notes on personal achievements (promotions, securing full-time work, etc.).
