Assignment task
Prepare and present a research poster in which you analyse an example of social change in a globalised world. This should relate to an aspect (or aspects) of global capitalism, and should include attention to social harms.

Examples could include: the impacts of ‘fast fashion’, challenges of labour migration, women workers in Asian garment industries, tourism and environmental degradation, modern slavery and human trafficking, indigenous communities and rights, water privatisation, or another issue of your choice.

Analyse and discuss the issue using relevant concepts or theories discussed during the module. Critically evaluate concepts and theories employed in terms of their usefulness in explaining and understanding aspects of the issue raised, and adapt them as necessary.

Present a case study of one organisation whose activities illustrate an aspect (or aspects) of the issue identified in your analysis. This could be a business (e.g. SHEIN, Apple, H&M, Tesco), a non-governmental organisation (e.g. Oxfam, Human Rights Watch, War on Want), an international governmental organisation or UN specialised agency (e.g. Interpol, World Trade Organisation, International Labour Organisation, International Organisation for Migration), or another relevant type of organisation.

Use visual media (e.g. graphs, diagrams, images) to convey information effectively, and use design features (e.g. colour, layout) to create impact.

Include the following inter-linked sections in your research poster:

1.Introduction: Concisely describe the nature of the issue under investigation and its background. Set your work in the context of previous research, citing relevant references.
2.Analysis & discussion: Drawing on relevant research and scholarly debates, and using appropriate theories and concepts, analyse key aspects of the issue. Develop key theses (‘take-home messages’) about the issue itself and the utility of selected concepts and theories to make sense of it.

3.Case study: Research and present a case study of an organisation that illustrates some of the themes that you have developed in your analysis.
4.Conclusion: Tie together the strands of your analysis, reflect on the significance of what you have argued, and consider limitations of your analysis and possible avenues for future research.

This assignment has been designed to provide you with an opportunity to demonstrate your achievement of the following module learning outcomes:
LO1: Demonstrate detailed and coherent knowledge and understanding of factors that shape contemporary globalising societies.
LO2: Critically evaluate and apply concepts and theories relating to aspects of social life in contemporary globalising societies.
