Exam preparation is a different skill from learning a subject. Plenty of students who understand their material still underperform in exams because they have never been taught how examiners allocate marks, how to manage time under pressure, or how to revise in a way that survives stress. We provide one-to-one exam and test preparation from £32 per hour, covering university exams and resits, professional qualifications, and the major admissions and English-language tests: IELTS, TOEFL, GMAT, GRE, SAT, ACT, UCAT and LNAT.
| University exams & resits | Past papers, timed practice, marking against real criteria |
| IELTS & TOEFL | All four skills, with Writing Task 1 and 2 marked to band descriptors |
| GMAT & GRE | Quantitative, verbal, data insights and analytical writing |
| SAT & ACT | Digital SAT format, section strategy and pacing |
| UCAT & LNAT | Decision making, situational judgement, critical reasoning, essay |
| Professional exams | ACCA, CIMA, CFA and CIPD assessment preparation |
| Price | From £32/hour; 10-hour package £280 |
| Format | 60 or 90 minute live sessions, recorded, with written feedback |
Most students revise by re-reading notes and highlighting. Both feel productive and both are close to worthless, because recognising material is not the same as being able to retrieve it. The research on this is unusually clear and unusually ignored.
What works instead is retrieval practice — closing the book and writing down everything you can recall, then checking what you missed — combined with spaced repetition, revisiting each topic at increasing intervals rather than in one block. Retrieval feels harder and more uncomfortable than re-reading, which is precisely why students avoid it and precisely why it works. A tutor's most valuable function in revision is forcing you to retrieve rather than recognise.
Every exam paper tells you how to spend your time, and most candidates ignore it. A 25-mark essay in a three-hour, 100-mark paper deserves roughly 45 minutes. Spending 70 minutes on it because you enjoy the topic guarantees you lose more marks elsewhere than you gain on it — the first marks in any answer are always the easiest to earn, and the last few are always the hardest.
Command words matter just as much. "Describe" and "evaluate" are different tasks with different mark schemes, and writing a beautiful description in response to "evaluate" caps your grade no matter how well written it is. We drill both of these with real past papers from your own institution.
For most international students the barrier is not vocabulary, it is task response and coherence. In IELTS Writing Task 2, candidates routinely lose a full band by not answering every part of the question, or by writing paragraphs with no clear central idea. Speaking bands are commonly held down by short answers rather than by accent or grammar — examiners need enough language to assess.
These are fixable in weeks, not months, because they are structural habits rather than knowledge gaps. We mark your writing against the published band descriptors so you can see exactly which criterion is costing you and why.

Six to eight weeks is ideal for a university exam and eight to twelve weeks for a major admissions test, because spaced repetition needs time to work. Shorter intensive plans are possible but rely more on technique than on content coverage.
Yes, and resits are one of the most common reasons students come to us. We start from your original script and feedback where available, because the marks lost usually reveal a specific fixable pattern.
Yes. Timed answers are marked against your real institutional criteria or the published band descriptors for IELTS and TOEFL, with written feedback explaining each judgement.
No. Re-reading and highlighting produce recognition rather than recall. Retrieval practice — writing down everything you remember from a blank page and then checking — combined with spaced repetition is substantially more effective.
Yes. Every session is recorded and shared afterwards with written notes, which is particularly useful during revision.
