Ten proofreading tips you can apply yourself
- Leave it 24 hours before proofing. You cannot see your own errors while the sentences are still fresh in memory.
- Read it aloud. Your ear catches what your eye skips — missing words, tangled clauses, endless sentences.
- Read backwards for spelling. Starting at the last sentence removes meaning and forces you to see the words.
- Use the "find" tool on your own habits. Everyone has them: "however", "in order to", "it can be argued that". Search and cut.
- Check every in-text citation against the reference list. Mismatches are the single most common avoidable penalty.
- Print it, or change the font. Any change in visual presentation makes errors visible again.

- Watch tense consistency in methodology and results sections, where it slips most often.
- Do not trust spellcheck alone. It will not flag "form" for "from", "trail" for "trial", or "public" missing an L.
