Quick answer

CIPD 5CO03 asks you to show how you behave as a people professional: ethically, inclusively and with a real commitment to your own development. Most centres assess it through a written account or report plus a CPD reflection. The marks sit in three places: appraising professionalism and ethics (LO1), arguing for inclusion with theory (LO2) and honest, evidenced reflection on your strengths, gaps and CPD (LO3).

How to approach each section

LO1: Professional and ethical behaviours (AC 1.1 to 1.4)

Assessment criterion 1.1 asks you to appraise what it means to be a people professional. "Appraise" means weigh up, not just describe. Use the CIPD Profession Map: its purpose, core knowledge, core behaviours and specialist knowledge. Then judge where the map helps and where it is hard to live up to in practice, for example when commercial pressure meets fairness.

For 1.2, show how personal values and ethical values shape decisions. Pick one people-practice situation (a disciplinary, a recruitment shortlist, a redundancy selection) and show the values at play. For 1.3, explain why people professionals should contribute in an informed, clear and confident way to influence others, and name one influencing approach you would use. For 1.4, set out when you would raise a concern and how: line manager, HR director, whistleblowing policy, and the legal backdrop such as the Public Interest Disclosure Act 1998.

ACCommand wordWhat a good paragraph contains
1.1AppraiseDefinition of a people professional, Profession Map link, one strength and one limitation
1.2RecogniseYour values vs organisational values, one workplace example
1.3ConsiderWhy evidence and clarity matter, one influencing technique, impact on credibility
1.4RecogniseTrigger points, escalation route, relevant law or policy

LO2: Inclusion and positive working relationships (AC 2.1 to 2.3)

AC 2.1 uses the command word "argue", so take a position and support it with theory. Split it into human benefits (wellbeing, belonging, psychological safety) and business benefits (retention, innovation, reputation, reduced legal risk). Link each to a named theory or study, and cite the Equality Act 2010 where relevant. AC 2.2 asks for strategies: inclusive recruitment, fair reward reviews, employee networks, flexible working, reasonable adjustments and line-manager training. Say how each would be designed and checked. AC 2.3 is your own reflection: how you build relationships and where you could be more inclusive.

LO3: Learning, CPD and performance (AC 3.1 to 3.4)

For 3.1, explore how the people profession is changing (hybrid work, people analytics, AI tools, wellbeing, ESG) and what that means for your CPD. For 3.2, assess your strengths and development areas using both self-assessment and feedback from others. For 3.3, build a CPD plan with formal and informal activities. For 3.4, reflect on the impact those activities had on your behaviour and performance.

Worked method example (not an answer)

Here is a method for 3.2 to 3.4 using an invented learner, "Sam", an HR adviser:

StepSam's invented evidenceHow it maps
1. Self-rate against 3 Profession Map behavioursEthical practice 4/5; Insights focused 2/5; Courage to challenge 3/53.2 self-assessment
2. Add feedback from othersManager: "reports are clear but rarely use data"; peer survey average 3.1/5 for data use3.2 feedback
3. Pick the gapUsing data to influence decisions3.2 development area
4. Plan CPDFormal: short Excel analytics course. Informal: shadow the reward analyst for two days3.3 formal and informal
5. Reflect on impactNext absence report included a trend chart; manager adopted one recommendation3.4 impact on behaviour and performance

Your own version must use your real ratings, real feedback and real outcomes.

Common mistake

Writing LO3 as a list of courses. Assessors want the thread: evidence of a gap, a reason for each CPD activity and a clear before-and-after effect on how you work. A long list with no reflection usually scores lower than two activities reflected on well.

Frequently asked questions

What is CIPD 5CO03?

5CO03 Professional Behaviours and Valuing People is a core unit of the CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma in People Management (and the Level 5 Associate Diploma in Organisational Learning and Development). The CIPD specification lists it at 5 credits with 20 guided learning hours and 50 hours total unit time.

How many learning outcomes does 5CO03 have?

Three: professional and ethical behaviours (LO1), inclusive and collaborative strategies for positive working relationships (LO2), and personal commitment to learning, CPD and performance improvement (LO3). Together they contain 11 assessment criteria.

Is 5CO03 written in first person?

Partly. The reflective criteria (2.3, 3.2, 3.4) need first-person reflection on your own practice. Criteria such as 1.1 and 2.1 are more analytical and should use theory and evidence. Check your brief for the exact format your centre uses.

Which theories work well for 5CO03 inclusion questions?

Useful starting points include social identity theory, psychological safety research, organisational justice (distributive, procedural and interactional fairness) and the CIPD Profession Map core values. Pick what you can apply to a real workplace example.

How do I show feedback from others in 5CO03?

Use real feedback: a 360 survey, appraisal comments, peer messages or a manager conversation. Summarise it briefly, show what it told you about a strength or gap, and link it to a CPD action. Do not invent feedback.

What CPD activities count for 5CO03?

Formal and informal activities both count: a short course, a webinar, reading CIPD research, shadowing a colleague, coaching, a stretch project or a reflective journal. Assessors want a range and a clear reason for each choice.

Can you help me with my 5CO03 assessment?

Yes, through tutoring. A tutor can explain the criteria, review your plan, give feedback on your draft and proofread your final version. The work you submit must be your own.
