CIPD 5OS06 Assignment Help: Leadership and Management Development Guide
Last updated: November 2026 · Reviewed by the HND Assignment Help tutoring team
Quick answer
CIPD 5OS06 Leadership and Management Development is an optional unit in the CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma in People Management. You explain why organisations need leaders and managers and how the roles differ (LO1), evaluate ways to develop them, including the role of L&D and EDI (LO2), and judge how well development initiatives work (LO3). Marks are lost most often in the "evaluate" and "compare" criteria, so weigh options rather than describe them.

How to approach each section
LO1: Leadership, management and what they require (AC 1.1 to 1.4)
AC 1.1 asks you to explain the external factors that drive the need for leadership and management. Use a quick PESTLE-style scan, then link each factor to a capability gap: frequent change needs change leadership, tighter competition needs commercial decision-making, new working methods need managers who can lead hybrid teams.
AC 1.2 asks for the meanings of leadership and management and how they depend on each other. A clear way in is the classic distinction that management copes with complexity (planning, budgeting, control) while leadership copes with change (direction, alignment, motivation), followed by a sentence on why one person usually needs both. AC 1.3 asks you to explain contrasting styles. Cover autocratic, democratic and laissez-faire, then two or three theories from the specification such as situational, transformational and transactional leadership.
AC 1.4 uses "compare", so put leadership and management side by side. A comparison table works well:
| Area | Management emphasis | Leadership emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Knowledge | Processes, policy, budgets | Strategy, context, people |
| Skills | Planning, organising, problem-solving | Influencing, vision-setting, coaching |
| Behaviours | Consistency, fairness, follow-through | Emotional intelligence, resilience, role-modelling inclusion |
LO2: Development initiatives, L&D and EDI (AC 2.1 to 2.3)
AC 2.1 asks you to identify the role of people professionals and L&D specialists. Walk through the cycle: training needs analysis, gap analysis, design and delivery, supporting potential leaders and advising on individual development. AC 2.2 asks you to evaluate a range of approaches. Choose four or five, such as coaching, mentoring, action learning sets, secondments, 360-degree feedback and formal programmes, and judge each on cost, transfer to the job and fit with your organisation.
AC 2.3 asks you to discuss why EDI should be integral to development. Cover fair access to programmes, unconscious bias awareness, accessible materials and the risk of developing leaders who all look and think alike.
LO3: Effectiveness of development (AC 3.1 to 3.3)
For AC 3.1, identify stakeholders such as sponsors, participants, senior leaders and line managers, and what each contributes. For AC 3.2, evaluate indicators of success. Kirkpatrick's four levels (reaction, learning, behaviour, results) is named in the specification; add measures such as succession, retention and KPI results. For AC 3.3, assess the impact on culture, strategy, reputation and performance, separating short-term from sustained effects.
Worked method example (not an answer)
Here is a method for AC 3.2, applying Kirkpatrick to an invented first-line manager programme at "Meadow Care Group" (all figures invented):
| Kirkpatrick level | Invented indicator | Judgement prompt |
|---|---|---|
| 2. Learning | Scenario test scores rose from 58% to 79% | Knowledge gained; is it applied? |
| 3. Behaviour | 360 feedback on "gives regular feedback" up from 2.9 to 3.6 out of 5 after six months | Some transfer; check by team |
| 4. Results | Team turnover down from 31% to 24% over a year | Other factors may also explain this |
Notice the last column: the marks come from judging the evidence, not just reporting it. Use your own organisation or the case in your brief.
Common mistake
Treating AC 2.2 as a list of methods with definitions. "Evaluate" means weighing strengths, weaknesses and fit. Two or three sentences per approach on cost, learning transfer and suitability for your context will score higher than a long glossary.

Frequently asked questions
What is CIPD 5OS06?
5OS06 Leadership and Management Development is an optional unit in the CIPD Level 5 Associate Diploma in People Management. The CIPD specification lists it at 6 credits, 25 guided learning hours and 60 hours total unit time.
How many assessment criteria does 5OS06 have?
Ten, across three learning outcomes: 1.1 to 1.4 on leadership and management, 2.1 to 2.3 on development initiatives, and 3.1 to 3.3 on effectiveness.
What is the difference between leadership and management for 5OS06?
Management is usually linked to planning, organising and control, while leadership is linked to direction, influence and change. The unit asks you to explain how the two overlap and depend on each other in practice.
Which evaluation model should I use?
Kirkpatrick's four levels is named in the CIPD specification and is a safe choice. You can add measures such as succession rates, retention and KPI results, and discuss the limits of linking results to training alone.
Do I need to write about EDI in 5OS06?
Yes. AC 2.3 asks why equality, diversity and inclusion should be integral to leadership and management development, so cover fair access, inclusive design and bias awareness.
Can I use my own organisation for 5OS06?
Usually yes, if your brief allows it. Some centres provide a case study instead. Keep individual details anonymous.
Can you help me with my 5OS06 assessment?
Yes, through tutoring. A tutor can explain the criteria, review your plan, give feedback on your draft and proofread your final version. The work you submit must be your own.
