Common Harvard Referencing Mistakes UK Students Make (and How to Fix Them)

Harvard referencing is the citation style most UK universities default to for essays, reports, and dissertations across subjects like business, humanities, social sciences, and law. Get the small details wrong, a missing bracket, an inconsistent date format, a reference list that does not match your in-text citations, and markers will dock marks for referencing accuracy even when your argument itself is strong. This guide covers the core rules you actually need, with examples you can copy.

What Is Harvard Referencing?

Harvard is an author-date referencing system: instead of numbered footnotes, you cite the author's surname and the year of publication directly in your sentence, then list full source details alphabetically in a reference list at the end of your work. There is no single official "Harvard" standard, UK universities each publish their own house style, usually based on Cite Them Right, so always check your own department's guide before submitting, and use the rules below as the general pattern most institutions follow.

In-Text Citations in Harvard Style

A Harvard in-text citation gives the reader just enough information to find the full reference in your reference list: the author's surname and the year, in round brackets.

  • One author: (Smith, 2023)
  • Two authors: (Smith and Jones, 2023)
  • Three or more authors: (Smith et al., 2023)
  • Direct quote: (Smith, 2023, p.45)
  • Author named in your sentence: Smith (2023) argues that...
  • No identifiable author: (Assignment Help UK, 2023), or use the organisation's name if there is no individual author to cite

When you cite more than one source making the same point, separate them with a semicolon and order them by year: (Smith, 2021; Jones, 2023).

Formatting Your Harvard Reference List

Every source cited in your text needs a matching entry in your reference list, and every entry in your reference list needs to be cited somewhere in your text. Entries are listed alphabetically by author surname, not by the order they appear in your work. The exact punctuation depends on the source type:

  • Book: Surname, Initial. (Year) Title of book. Edition (if not the first). Place of publication: Publisher.
  • Journal article: Surname, Initial. (Year) 'Title of article', Title of Journal, Volume(Issue), pp. page range.
  • Website: Surname, Initial. or Organisation (Year) Title of webpage. Available at: URL (Accessed: date).

Keep formatting, italics, capitalisation, punctuation, exactly consistent across every entry of the same type. Inconsistent formatting is one of the most common ways students lose easy marks.

Common Harvard Referencing Mistakes

  • Citing a source in the text but forgetting to add it to the reference list, or the reverse
  • Mixing reference list and bibliography styles, a reference list only includes sources you actually cited, not everything you read
  • Inconsistent date formats or missing page numbers on direct quotes
  • Using "et al." for two authors instead of naming both
  • Copying a reference from a citation generator without checking it against your university's actual style guide

Quick Harvard Referencing Checklist

  • Does every in-text citation have a matching reference list entry, and vice versa?
  • Is your reference list in alphabetical order by surname?
  • Are all direct quotes given a page number?
  • Is formatting consistent across every entry of the same source type?
  • Have you checked your specific university's referencing guide, not just a generic Harvard template?
