How to Write a Research Proposal for a UK Dissertation

How to Write a Research Proposal for a UK Dissertation

Before you can start your dissertation, most UK universities require a research proposal to be approved by your supervisor or ethics panel. A well-structured proposal not only gets approved faster but also gives you a clear roadmap for the months of research ahead. Here's how to structure one that meets UK academic standards.

1. Title and Introduction

Your title should be specific and indicate the scope of your study. The introduction should establish the background of your topic, briefly outline the problem you're addressing, and state why the research matters.

2. Research Aim, Objectives, and Questions

State one overarching aim, followed by 3-4 specific objectives. Turn these into clear, answerable research questions — these will guide your entire methodology chapter later.

3. Literature Review Summary

You don't need a full literature review at proposal stage, but you should demonstrate awareness of the key theories, models, and existing studies relevant to your topic, and identify the gap your research will address.

4. Proposed Methodology

  • Research philosophy and approach (e.g. positivist/interpretivist, deductive/inductive)
  • Data collection method (surveys, interviews, secondary data analysis)
  • Sampling strategy and expected sample size
  • Planned data analysis technique (statistical tests, thematic analysis, etc.)

5. Ethical Considerations

UK universities require you to address consent, confidentiality, data storage, and any risks to participants. Even secondary-data dissertations usually need a short ethics statement.

6. Timeline and Resources

Include a realistic Gantt chart or timeline covering literature review, data collection, analysis, and writing-up phases, mapped against your submission deadline.

Common Reasons Proposals Get Rejected

  • Research questions that are too broad or unanswerable within the word count
  • No clear methodology or mismatched method for the research questions
  • Missing or superficial ethics section
  • Unrealistic timeline
